Monthly Meeting

Join us for our regular monthly meeting! We’ll hear from our speaker, Barbie Mathis, who creates acrylic, watercolor, collage and mixed media paintings, at 6:30PM. After Barbie presents, we’ll break for snacks and social, before returning for any regular business.

In the past 45 years as a professional artist, Barbie Mathis has evolved from being a commercial artist, designer and illustrator into becoming a fine art painter of watercolors, acrylics, collage and mixed media. She currently teaches a variety of classes and workshops in watermedias and collage while continuing to paint realistic landscapes and flowers of the southeast, as she is inspired by the many scenic waters and gardens around me. She is honored to be represented by City Art in Columbia, SC., and to be a Member with Excellence in the South Carolina Watermedia Society. She also enjoys memberships in the Cayce Arts Guild and the Trenholm Artists Guild.

Monthly Turnout

Turnouts were created as a way for us to have consistent connections with one another outside of our making and meeting times. These events happen on the last day of each month (usually at 6pm, but check back for location + time updates) at inclusive venues around the city. We try to thoughtfully choose spaces that are large enough for a group, have a chill vibe for good conversation, and don't require a purchase of any kind just to hang out.

Monthly Meeting

Join us for our regular monthly meeting! We’ll hear from our speaker, SCDNR Community Archaeologist and Education Specialist, Lelia Rice, at 6:30PM. After Lelia presents, we’ll break for snacks and social, before returning for any regular business.

Lelia Rice works at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Cultural Heritage Trust Program as a fulltime Community Archaeologist and Education Specialist. She provides children’s programming with hands-on activities in the classroom designed to teach archaeology. Rice presentations have her travel across the state to attend schools and libraries, often with the assistance of other Heritage Trust staff members. Rice represents Heritage Trust at several festivals throughout the state, many related to either science or celebrations of culture.

The SCDNR Cultural Heritage Trust maintains a collection of more than 600 Edgefield vessels manufactured at the Joseph Gregory Banyham pottery located in Trenton on what is now the Horse Creek Heritage Preserve. This collection and Edgefield pottery has now become a focus of Lelia Rice’s studies as she pursues a Master of Arts in Public History with a concentration in museums at USC. Rice's thesis will focus on Baynham's life, his pottery and the property itself. The pottery collection includes whiskey stackers, cream risers, beehive jugs, poultry waterers, and churns. Banyham’s successful businesses included the pottery, a tannery, and a gristmill. As part of her masters, she plans to design traveling exhibits to share her knowledge and the vessels with the public.

Spring Sale Committee Interest Meeting

Can you believe it? Our Spring Sale will be at Stormwater Studios in a few short months - from May 1st - 3rd!

Whether it'll be your first time participating in an MCAS sale, or your umpteenth time, if you're considering how you can become more involved in making MCAS sales a success for all artists, participating in the Sale Committee is a great way to learn more and help grow member capacity! Consider joining our Spring Sale manager, Tennyson Corley, for an interest meeting Tuesday, January 28th at 6:30PM at the Columbia Art Center, 1227 Taylor, where we hold our regular member meetings. Can't make it, but want to learn more? Get in touch with Tennyson by replying to our social post or sending us an email.

In the meantime, you can also learn more about the sale committee roles by scrolling through these images - and know there's an opportunity to assist, too, without being the lead - which can be a great way to learn the ropes while trying out something new.

CANCELLED: January Monthly Meeting

The January MCAS meeting has been cancelled due to anticipated winter weather; please make plans to join us in February!

Join us for our regular monthly meeting! Hear from our speaker, Chandler Cox, on product photography at 6:30. After Chandler’s presentation, we’ll break briefly for snacks and social, and then continue with regular business.

About Chandler:

Chandler notes that growing up, the printed photographs and home videos her family kept provided a window into our everyday life, allowing her to relive simple yet meaningful moments—like family dinners, movie nights, or playing outside in pajamas. These memories shaped her photography style, which focuses on capturing life's authenticity. In 2015, she bought her first camera, which has since become a key part of her creative journey. Despite exploring other careers, photography has remained her true passion, and today, she is grateful to pursue it professionally. She gravitates towards working with artists, small businesses, and interior designers. She loves capturing their work and/or product authentically for the world to see!

A reminder, too, that we'll start with Chandler's presentation at 6:30PM, and break for snacks/social after we hear from Chandler. Membership info coming to your emails soon, or plan to join for 2025 at the meeting - see y'all Tuesday!
